With their selection of talent as part of efforts to promote up-and-coming international designers, Mercedes-Benz and Elle once again proved that they have just the right instinct for trends. The audience at the Erika Hess Eisstadion enthusiastically welcomed the collection by 25-year-old Roshi Porkar of Vienna. Celebrities such as Franziska Knuppe, Chiara Schoras, Brian Rennie, Rebecca Mir and Massimo Sinato also attended the show featuring exceptional creations by this highly talented designer.
Roshi Porkar looked to Bactrian princesses – stone statuettes from Central Asia that date back more than 4,000 years – as inspiration for her first collection and was fascinated by their unusual shapes, clothing and artistic hairstyles. Based on these forms, combined with retro-futuristic elements and realised in an unusual mix of fabrics, the result is a trend-setting collection that was awarded the Chloé Prize at this year’s Festival International de Mode et de Photographie in Hyères.
“My creations are based on the ‘kaunakes’, Sumerian skirts made of fur and wool,” says Roshi Porkar, commenting on her collection. “I tried to create shapes that are both bold and elegant, combining faux fur and fine wool. The waists and necklines are emphasised by angular shoulders and delicate, light blue kimono belts.”
Roshi Porkar studied under Veronique Branquinho and Bernhard Wilhelm at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. After graduating, she worked for stylist Karl Templer in New York and with the women’s clothing design team at Lanvin in Paris.
Mercedes-Benz and Elle have expressed their commitment to providing targeted support to up-and-coming designers. This is now the seventh time that the two brands have teamed up to invite promising talent to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. “Design plays a central role in both the fashion and automotive worlds, and is one of a brand’s most important success factors. It is a combination of unusual ideas, personal character and unmistakable style,” says Dr. Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Communication at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “This is why one of our focal points is the promotion of creative, talented, up-and-coming designers.”
Mercedes-Benz has been involved in the world’ s most important fashion platforms for 18 years and is currently engaged in 47 fashion events in 26 countries.
“Roshi Porkar is a courageous designer who does not lose sight of what is important: the beauty and individuality of fashion! She loves feminine shapes, playing with materials and experimenting with ethnic influences. She is particularly skilled at taking retro shapes into the future!” says Sabine Nedelchev, Editor-in-Chief of Elle. With 44 editions in more than 90 countries, Elle is one of the world’s largest, most familiar media brands and has been Germany’s best-selling high-end fashion magazine for more than 25 years. The fashion magazine demonstrates its exceptional fashion expertise with its unerring instinct for talented designers.
