The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter made its debut 25 years ago. To mark its premiere on 23 January 1995, the brand sent 500 units of the completely newly constructed transporter from the Düsseldorf factory on a rally to the sales offices.

Since production of the L 1100 had ended in 1941, the light-duty segment at Mercedes-Benz had been thoroughly neglected. It now seemed the right time to tackle once again the enormous market that had developed during the post-war years. The first true van was the L 319, which went into series production in 1956. At its launch the previous year at the Frankfurt Motor Show it had been received with scepticism by the experts, but with enthusiasm by customers.

From its 1995 launch the Sprinter already was in a class of its own: semi-forward control, high-traction rear-wheel drive, timelessly modern looks, spacious cab, an extensive engine range rounded off by a direct-injection diesel unit which was as powerful as it was economical. And it was the company's first commercial vehicle to be known by a name instead of an abbreviation or combination of numbers.

The German soccer champion is Rot-Weiß Essen, the German chancellor rides in a Mercedes-Benz car named “Adenauer”. The year is 1955, and the “economic miracle”, initiated by Federal Minister of Economics, Ludwig Erhardt, and the social market economy propagated by him, calls for new means of transport. In response to this, one of the vehicles launched into the market was the Mercedes-Benz L 319. The first van with the three-pointed star – called express truck at the time – celebrated its premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

35 years ago, Düsseldorf large-capacity vans came on the scene. Numerous versions from 3.5 to 6.5 tons, plus buses. A success story which spanned just under 20 years.
