In the life cycle assessment certified by experts from Germany’s TÜV (technical inspection authority), Mercedes engineers analysed the entire life span of the new C-Class – from the production of its materials and components through to the use phase of the car based on a total of 200,000 kilometres driven. Both emissions and the amount of energy consumed were calculated. Altogether, the Mercedes engi-neers examined 40,000 individual processes for the life cycle assessment.

The recycling system for the new C-Class includes the reprocessing of high-grade materials from vehicles which have reached the end of their useful life. A special Mercedes Recycling System ensures that good-quality automotive plastics do not end up on a rubbish heap but live again in a different form. One example of this is the front wheel arch linings, which are made of recycled plastic derived from used battery casings and bumper panels. The new Mercedes model already complies with the EU recycling directive planned for 2015, which specifies a recyclability rate of 95 percent (with a maximum of only ten percent in the form of energy re-covery).

The guiding principle of “Design for Environment” (DfE) has been a central part of the development process of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars for twelve years. Ex-perts from the fields of life cycle assessment, dismantling and recycling planning, materials and process engineering, as well as design and production are involved in the development of new models right from the start, defining the environ-mental specifications and ensuring that the precepts of DfE are adhered to. Fol-lowing the S-Class, which was launched in 2005, the new C-Class is the second model from Mercedes to have its environmentally oriented development process scrutinised and verified by independent experts. This makes Mercedes-Benz the only automotive brand in the world with an environmental certificate in accor-dance with ISO standards.
